Naveen Rejects Saffron Blame

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today rejected opposition BJP's accusation that no allotment was made for an irrigation project, while the saffron party members created ruckus in the State Legislative Assembly leading to repeated  adjournments.

BJP Members rushed into Well of the House and blamed the State Government for not making any funding in the Supplementary Budget for the Gangadhar Meher Lift Canal System in Bargar district.

Saffron Lawmakers raised anti-government slogans and claimed the government has shown disrespect to the eminent 19th century poet Gangadhar Meher after whom the project is named, by not allocating funds for it.

Unable to run the House, Speaker Pradip Kumar Amat adjourned the House till 11.30 AM.

After the House reassembled, BJP Members continued shouting in the Well while Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik was making a statement on the issue.

Being interrupted by the Opposition Members, Chief Minister urged them to cooperate “Without shedding crocodile tears.”

He informed the House that in the annual budget of 2017-18, Rs 1.5 crore has been allocated under pre-project activities of pipeline projects including Bijepur Lift Irrigation Project.

One of those 58 projects, Bijepur Lift Irrigation Project has recently been renamed as Gangadhar Meher Lift Canal System and it would be reflected in the outcome budget of Water Resources Department, he informed the Assembly.

Besides, the Government has set up a Division Office at Bijepur with an Executive Engineer, three Assistant Executive Engineers and six Junior Engineers with other support staff to look after this project, he said.

The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 1246.56 crore. The project will provide irrigation to 25600 hectares in Khariff and 7000 hectares in Rabi in the drought affected Bijepur, Sohela and Barapalli Blocks of Bargarh district, Mr.Patnaik said.

The Chief Minister said modern irrigation technology such as Under Ground Pipe Line with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System will be adopted in this project for efficient water management. Micro irrigation system will be taken up in 30 Percent of the Project Command Area.

“Unlike others we talk less but our work speaks for itself. We are the only Government to adopt Party Manifesto and implementing the same in letter and spirit,” Chief Minister said.
