600 CR For Eye Care

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has announced that the State Government is planning to spend over Rs 600 crore from its own sources in the next five years for the Universal Eye Health Program.

Launching the State level function for Observance of World Sight Day-2017, Mr.Patnaik said Odisha is the first State in the country to have formulated a Universal Eye Health Program to keep people protected from avoidable vision related problems and to provide comprehensive eye care to the persons of all age groups.
He said Vision Centers equipped with appropriate eye-care facilities will be established across the State initially at all CHCs and later at PHCs or even Sub Centre level to cover the entire population.
 “Requisite trained manpower shall be made available to make this program a success”, the Chief Minister stated.
Mr.Patnaik said all cataract cases in Odisha, which constitutes 80 percent burden of blindness, will get free operation facility and appropriate glasses. “Maximum number of corneal blind people will get back their vision through corneal transplantation surgeries free of cost”, he said.
Massive screening program will be undertaken to detect Diabetes Retinopathy, and other serious eye problems and patients will be provided free treatment at government hospitals.
“All school students will be screened for refractory error and other eye problems and will be supplied spectacles free of cost in the school itself”, Mr.Patnaik said.
He also launched a web-based Information Monitoring System that will help establish linkages with all private and empanelled hospitals with the government. “I believe people will be encouraged to register their eye problems at the nearest available eye-care centers, and we can track each and every registered cases to monitor the services”, he said.
The benefits of the Universal Eye Health Program include focusing on providing comprehensive eye care to people of Odisha which will be available on continuous basis, accessible, affordable and equitable of all age group from birth to old age, all cataract cases in the State.
