Temple Time For Netas

As the poll bells ring, the netas rushed to nearest temple for offering pujas either before filing nomination papers or kick-starting election campaign.

The phobia has hit the leaders across parties and visiting temple is no more the unique selling proposition (USP) of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), primarily known as a Hindu party.

Apart from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah, Congress President Rahul Gandhi also adorn ‘dhoti’ and offer puja at Shree Mahakal temple recently.

The regional Biju Janata Dal (BJD) President Naveen Patnaik is also no different.

Though it is considered that Naveen is not like a person to frequent to temples or perform puja at home, Odisha Chief Minister has also visited several temples during the election campaign and ahead of filing nomination paper.

When, Naveen went to file his nomination papers seeking election for fifth time from Hinjili, Naveen visisted Maa Tara Tarini Temple, a powerful Shakti Pitha, where he performed puja before going to Sub-Collector’s office at Chhatrapur in Ganjam district.

The people of Odisha for the first time found Naveen with a red ‘tilak’ on his forehead while filing nomination paper for Hinjili.

A Chief Minister for 19 years and a popular leader, Naveen used to refrain from putting ‘tilak’ or ‘chandan’ on his forehead. While almost most political leaders are seen putting garlands around their shoulders, Naveen never gets such thin.

However, Naveen receives flower bouquets from visitors.

During his visit to Western Odisha, Naveen paid puja at Manikeswari temple at Bhawanipatna before starting his road shows and public meetings.

Naveen of late is using the word “Mahaprabhu” referring Lord Jagannath while Prime Minister Narendra Modi never forgets to begin his speeches in Odisha by chanting “Jay Jagannath.”

Tuesday witnessed BJP President Amit Shah of offer ‘Diya’ at the Lions Gate of Shree Jagannath Temple before starting his roadshow in the seaside pilgrim town of Odisha to bolster the prospects of his party in the Lok Sabha and state Assembly elections.

Before embarking on the road show on "Bada Danda", the grand avenue, from the Singha Dwara (Lion's Gate) of Shree Jagannath Temple, Mr.Shah visited the 12th century shrine and sought the blessings of the Lord.

This is not that election is the temple time for the big leaders. Even small leaders seeking election from assembly segments used to visit local temples and start their journey from there.

Temples have now become the starting point of political shows and leaders follow it’s with all sincerity.

More than the blessings of the God, the leaders want to show their voters that they too believe in Almighty and therefore start their work from the temple gates.

Political analysts say that not only in India or Odisha, political leaders across the world used to take shelter of God and offer prayer in temples mosques and churches for fulfilment of their political ambitions.
