Dhanu Jatra From 11 JAN

Dhanu Jatra Mahotsav at Bargarh will be organized this year in a big way to attract the attention of tourist across the Globe.

This is an Annual Cultural Festival, where lakhs of footfalls takes place across the World with full fervour and enthusiasm.
This year Dhanu Jatra will start from 11January and will continue for 11days till 21January.
General Body Meeting of Dhanu Jatra Mahotsav was held today at Bargarh chaired by District Collector Indramani Tripathy, which decided to organize the festival in a grand way.
Meeting was graced by MP Bargarh, MLA Bargarh President Zilla Parishad and other dignitaries and members of civil society attended the meeting.
Superintendent of Police, Bargarh, Mukesh Kumar Bhamoo also graced the occasion as Vice President of the GB of Dhanu Jatra Mahotsav.
Dhanu Jatra was started way back in1947-48 to commemorate the Independence of India with a strong social massage as freedom from bondage.

Dhanu Jatra is celebrated every year in the month of Pausa (Odia Month) for eleven days. The festival begins with the coronation ceremony of demon king Kansa after dethroning of his father king Ugrasen from Mathura.
A colourful cultural procession accompanied by folk dancers moves round the streets of Bargarh town after performing puja at the Maa samaleswari temple and reaches the court of King Kansa which is erected at Hatapada and is named as Raj Darbar.
The first day is also enactment the wedding of Devaki and Basudeva that gets solemnised in Ramji temple of Nayak Pada.
Later, King Kansa moves around his Kingdom atop a caparisoned elephant in a procession along with the newly wedded couple when a divine voice warns him of his impending death at the hands of the eighth child born to the couple.
After the warning King Kansa puts Devaki and her husband Basudev in Jail.
King Kansa’s Army of demons helped him spread fear and accomplish his evil tasks. His close aids and servants were Putuna, Bakasura and Arghasura etc.
Bargarh town transforms into the mythological Mathura as “Dhanu Jatra” the largest open air theatre in the World.
To make the event livelier, Elephants, Horses and Camels takes part in the procession of the Kansa known as “Nagar parikraman”.
For last couple of years a new stage at Loka Mandap ground has been constructed to organise cultural events for the entertainment of the demon king at evening which is known as Ranga Mahal of King Kansa.
To add more glory and charm to the festival, different departments organises various exhibitions like- Special Handloom Expo by Textile Department., Handicraft exhibitions by DIC, Trade fares by commercial organisations and Pallishree Mela by ORMAS. Meena Bazar, Magic Show, circus and food stalls in George High school ground are the major attraction for all segments of people.
During this eleven days festival, Bargarh town virtually turns into City of Mathura, River Jeera becomes Yamuna and Ambapali situated on the other side of river jeera becomes Gopapur. Gopapur, where various childhood activities of lord Krishna like makhanchori, kaliyadalan, bastraharan etc. are enacts. 
About 10,000 strong residents of Ambapali involves themselves so deeply with the annual festival that they shun non-vegetarian foods for 15 days during the Dhanu Jatra while each household perform special prayer.
The uniqueness of this festival is that all the people of Bargarh become the artistes and the entire town becomes a big stage.
However all the episodes of the festival takes place in 18 different places of the town making it the largest Open Air Theatre in the World. 
The places where these episodes will be enacted are , Raj Darbar at Hatapada  Rangmahal at Lokamandap Ground , Nanda Darbar at Ambapali , Krushna Janma at the makeshift prison, Bijuli Kanya at Samaleswari Mandap ,Talipada  And Devaki- Basudev Marriage will be organized Ramji Mandir , Nayak Pada
Srikrishna Nabakeli at Mana Bandha, Kaliya Dalan at Fakira Bandha Ambapali, Brundaban Tota, Jeera nadi

Initial reception of Krishna Balram will be at Mata Matha near Marwadi Pada

Arrival of Krishna Balaram From Gopapur   will be organized at Adimata Temple, Khajur Tikira

Kubja Uddhar will be at Kalimandir, and there will be Muni Rishi Kutir at Govindpali

Mobile Court of Kansa will be at Railway Station Pada and similar Mobile court of Kansa will be at Brahmachari

Jeera Nadi will turn Jamuna River and Putuna/Sadasur Badha will be organized at Ambapali Dahnu Yatra Mandap

Raj Mahal will be at Panchayat Dharamsala and Sanchar Mandali will be at Hatpada.

During these eleven days Kansa goes on a Nagar Parikraman on an Elephant every afternoon.

He imposes fines in any one for violation of rules. He also holds a Darbar (court) to listen the grievances of his subjects and rewards & punishes then accordingly.

The reward and punishment is applicable to everyone including Ministers, MP, MLA or other senior officials.

Everyone has to pay respect to the demon king and obey his order without fail.

The Festival ends with the assassination of King Kansa by Lord Sri Krishna that signifies the victory over evil and the people of Bargarh District celebrates the event by distributing ladoos with a slogan “Kansa Raja Ra Bansa Budu ... Kansa Male Khaema Ladoo".
