Odia Chairs In Varsities

The State Government has proposed setting up of two Odia chairs- at Central University of Gujarat (CUG) and Central University of Hyderabad (CUH). The proposal has been sent to the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, said State Tourism and Culture Minister Ashok Chandra Panda.  

 
Briefing media persons after Culture Departments review by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik here today, Mr.Panda said an Odia Chair has been setup at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi in the name of Adikabi Sarala Das on February 22, 2017. Another Odia chair in the name of Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja has been established at Banaras Hindu Universuty, Varanasi on February 28, 2018. “For the first time, an Odia chair has been established in a University outside Odisha”, said Panda.
 
The Minister said a commemorative postage stamp was released on Nabakalebara-2015 and ‘Neela Kandar’, a National Artist Camp was organised on the occasion of Nabakalebara. Besides, ‘Nabakaiebara’- an archival document has also been released by the department.
 
He said Odia Virtual Academy has been established and the web portal was launched by the Chief Minister on Odia Naba Barsha on April 14, 2017.
 
Mr.Panda said a detailed proposal has been sent to the Central Institute of Indian Languages for establishment of Centre of Excellence (Central Institute of Classical Odia) at erstwhile campus of Utkal University of Culture. He said Odisha Sahitya Academy has translated as many as 14 Odia creative writings into different languages like, Telugu, Bangali, Hindi and English. “It has released around 25 books of different writers in the seven day special cultural programme organised on the occasion of Odia New Year”, Panda informed.
 
The Minister said for the first time, Hindi translation of the great epic Odia Mahabharat by Adikabi Sarala Das was released by Odisha Sahitya Akademi on September 17, 2015 at New Delhi. The Odia Bhasa Pratisthan has published two useful books namely ‘Prashasana Sabdakosh and 'Odia Bhasara Itibruta’. Archival publications on 'Na-Anka Durvikhya' and 'Quit India movement' were released by the department, he said.
Mr.Panda said two books — one on Madhu Babu and another on Biju Babu were released by the State Museum.

He said commemorative coin of Rs 100 and circulation coin of Rs 5 of Late Biju Patnaik, former Chief Minister and freedom fighter was released on March 5, 2016 on the occasion of his birth centenary. A commemorative postage stamp on Biju Patnaik was also released on March 5, 2018, he said.
 
Mr.Panda said steps have been taken to revive the traditional ethos of Odisa like Bhagabat Tungis. “In last three years, Culture Department has allotted Rs. 9 crore to revive Bhagabat Tungis in the State and during the current financial year a provision of Rs 9 crore has been made for this purpose”, he said.

The Minister said the pension amount of indident artists in the Stte has been raised from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,200. He added for the welfare of indigent artists, a new scheme named ‘Mukhya Mantri Kalakaar Sahayata Yojana’ has been introduced. “As many as 50,000 eligible artists will be covered under this scheme”, the Minister said.
