2K Barrages On Maha

Odisha Legislative Assembly was informed today that the Chhattisgarh Government has constructed over 2200 barrages upstream the river.

Minister Water Resources, Niranjan Pujari stunned the House revealing that as many as 443 more barrages are under construction in that State.

The Minister told the House, in response to a query from BJP MLA Dillip Ray that Chhattisgarh Government has constructed as many as 2268 barrages on Mahanadi River

Similarly, another neighbor Jharkhand has also constructed over 15 barrages on another major river Brahmani while work was on three more, the Minister said.

These 2268 includes eight major, 29 medium and 1860 minor barrages for irrigation projects while as many as 371 annicuts have also been constructed by Chhattisgarh government which includes four major, three medium and 305 minor projects, the Minister said in his reply.

He said with the construction of these projects the usage of water by that government may rise to about 27.48 acre-foot from 8.31 million acre-foot.

Mr.Pujari expressed concern that with these constructions production of power, irrigation, water to industries and drinking water supply is likely to be hit as flow of water to Hirakud dam has depleted considerably.

Similarly, the Water Resources Minister said Andhra Pradesh Government too has continued construction of Polavaram project on Saberi (Kolab) River which is likely to impact water flow to State.

However, State government has approached the Supreme Court in this regard, the Minister informed the House.

He said, Andhra Pradesh government has also been constructing barrages across Bansdhara and Nagabali rivers. The Gota barrage on Bansdhara poses threat to several parts of Kashinagar and Gunupur areas due to accumulation of silt in the barrage.

The Neradi barrage, being constructed by Andhra Pradesh Government, is likely to inundate a sizable part of Gunupur while the barrage over Mahendratanaya at Chapra and another barrage at Katraguda also pose threat to areas in State, the Minister said.

Mr.Pujari said the barrage at Chhotapalli on Nagavali River is also set to cause flood havoc in several areas of Rayagada district.

The Minister Water Resources said, Jharkhand Government too has constructed 15 barrages over  River Brahmani—which is a confluence of Sankh and Koel river.
