IIM Gets State Support

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik extended his support for partnership of the State Government with Indian Institute of Management Sambalpur in its journey of inclusive growth.


Addressing the second Annual Convocation of IIM Sambalpur here today, the Chief Minister said the institute is growing fast and positioning itself as a centre of excellence in innovation and entrepreneurship. “It is heartening to know, that the Institute has been aiming to prepare ethical leaders who along with their commitment to business, commerce and industry also strive for social consciousness while contributing to nation building”, he said.
 
Mr.Patnaik said several IIM students are desirous of innovation based entrepreneurial opportunities. “You must try to build upon your potential by converting innovative ideas into sustainable business models in order to create socio economic value for our country and society. IIM Sambalpur should take lead in developing the Centres of Excellence for start-ups and Incubators”, he  said, adding all these efforts at IIM will go a long way in fostering the community's entrepreneurial climate by means of business creation and retention, technology commercialization and creating of jobs and wealth.

The Chief Minister said IIM Sambalpur should become an active participant, a knowledge partner and a think tank for planning, strategizing and reinforcing government schemes for social development. “India is progressing rapidly in new era. We boast of our demographic dividend - the young talented, energetic and skilful minds with passion and fervor to build a new and better India”, he added. Patnaik told the students, “As you embark upon your new journey, I would like to say that you are here because you are the best in the Country and I want you to show to the World that India is the best. The nation looks up to you not only as able managers but also as social entrepreneurs who will work to change the World into a better place”.

In her address, Chairman of IIM Arundhati Bhattacharjee expressed her utmost pleasure at the miraculous progress of Odisha under the leadership of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. “We all are witnessing how Odisha government is moving ahead of growth and development in terms of mineral resources, development of MSMEs, setting up of new start up hubs and many more,”  Bhattacharjee said. She expressed gratitude for the continued support of the State government in the growth of the new IIM at Sambalpur.
The chairman further informed that 45 successful students of the current year will be joining managerial work forces of the reputed corporate in India and abroad.

“The current society is living in a world with increasingly greater uncertainty and unpredictability and higher complexity. The uncertainty and unpredictability are often a result of conspicuous consumption, greed or throwing financial prudence and control out of the window,” she said.  Bhattacharjee expressed concern over excessive consumption of natural resources. The chairman emphasized on sustainable development while achieving professional goals.

Director of IIM Sambalpur Mahadeo Jaiwal said the Indian Institute of Management Sambalpur is planning to develop two clusters of smart villages in Odisha to accelerate economic and social development. While one cluster is proposed to be developed near Sambalpur, another will be set up in Koraput district, the Director said. 

"We have decided to set up two clusters of smart villages in the State. It is at the conceptual stage now," Prof.Jaiswal said. The objective is to spur economic and social development in the villages to make the people self-sufficient, he said.
 
Some villages would be identified for the purpose and the problems of these areas would be ascertained. The business, tourism and other potential of those areas would also be identified, and the required facilities would be provided, he added. The students as well as the faculty members of the institution will be involved for the business development model for the clusters, the Director said.
 
Prof.Jaiswal also said they will approach the local industries for initial support for implementing the plan.
