Fire Sleuths Seal Halls

In a first of its kind, personnel of the Odisha Fire Service sealed two Marriage Halls namely ‘Myntra Nirvana’ and ‘The Sapphire’.

These Halls are in the basement of The New Marrion Hotel located in Janapath, Bhubaneswar.

Adequate and comprehensive fire safety measures were found mission in these basements halls.

Odisha Fire Services today conducted simultaneously inspection of  shopping malls, jewellery shops and hotels in the Capital City to check fire prevention and fire safety measures.

Such simultaneous inspections were conducted by 13 different teams in 26 establishments.

Each team led by a senior officer checked safety measures in these shopping malls.

Inspection broadly reveals that many shopping malls, jewellery shops and hotels do not have complete and comprehensive fire safety measures.

In some places, fixed fire fighting installations/fire extinguishers are available but few other equipments are necessary to be installed.

Good housekeeping, which plays a vital role in fire safety, was not found. Escape routes in some places were blocked.

Many do not have adequate exit signages to lead the occupants to places of safety in case of any emergency.

Notice shall be issued to the defaulting malls, shops etc and to fulfill the shortcomings within specified time period.

According to sources, highly combustible and inflammable materials were used in the ceiling, wall etc. of these halls, namely ‘Myntra Nirvana’ and ‘The Sapphire’

Entry/Exit staircases to the halls were not of adequate width, thereby preventive escape in case of requirement of evacuation.

Since social/marriage functions involving congregation of people take place on a daily basis in these halls, on emergency grounds both the halls were sealed to prevent damage to human lives arising out of fire accident in terms of provisions of Odisha Fire Prevention & Fire Safety Rules, 2017, said an official.
