Urge For Agri Varsity

Young Non Resident Odia(NRO) Digambar Patra has urged the  Odisha Government to set up the Central Agricultural University in KBK.

Prof. Patra has urged Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to fulfill the promise made four years ago, which is yet to be fulfilled.

He said that BJD had announced in its Election Manifesto in 2014 to establish Second Agriculture University in KBK.

Since than 4 years has passed. In a year or so, another election is at the door step. However, second Agriculture University in the State is still awaiting state Government’s approval.

Odisha had one Agriculture University, the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), which was established in 1962.

The university is overburdened at present in performing various tasks, including 10 colleges, 28 Krishi Vigyan Kendras and eight Regional Research Technology Transfer Stations.

So there is a need for a Central Agriculture University to serve the needs of Odisha, particularly the undivided Koraput-Balangir-Kalahandi (KBK) Districts.

It may be noted that as per former union agriculture minister Mr. Sharad Pawar letter to Odisha state Government, the State Government had asked Orissa University of Agriculture Technology (OUAT) to submit a feasibility report to upgrade an Agriculture University at Bhawanipatna.

It was based on the idea that despite being a backward area, Kalahandi has emerged as one of the top producers of rice, cotton and pulses in the state, which require advanced technology to meet the growing demand in the coming years.

Earlier Agriculture Minister of Odisha had also announced that an Agriculture University would come in Bhawanipatna, however, due to some regional and state politics the idea is in cold storage since then.

Bhawanipatna is recognized as the most suitable place for Agriculture University various reasons

Kalahandi is the top most agriculture producer, mainly paddy, pulses, cotton etc. district among the KBK districts and it is among the 25th largest rice producer districts in India.

It is not limited to rice alone, agriculture products in Kalahandi is very diverse unlike many other districts in the region.

The agriculture growth of the district is not yet fully explored and it is predicted that it can be one of the forefront district in the nation in agriculture growth.

Bhawanipatna is located centrally among all KBK districts and suits the interest for all the KBK districts.

And the proximity of Bhawanipatna to all the existing Regional Research and Transfer Technology Stations and Regional Research and Transfer Technology Sub-Stations of OUAT in KBK and Western Odisha region even demands location of the proposed Agriculture University at Bhawanipatna.

In fact, the Kalahandi District Collector had already identified 500 acres of land for possible Agriculture University.

Under this backdrop, Prof.Patra has urged the State Government to fulfill its promise for an Agricultural University in KBK in general and particularly in Kalahandi.
