Natural Calamities are taking on an average 2000 heads per annum in Odisha, which has turned out to be a Calamity Zone.

Despite preventive measures being taken by State authorities death toll is still in higher proportion.

During last 5 years atleast 10,406 people of the state are killed in different natural calamities.

Drowning, snake bite and lightning have become major threats during last 5 years and atleast 3848 people are killed in Odisha because of drowning whereas death toll due to snake bite during these years is recorded at 3627. Lightning alone took 1940 heads in last five years.

In 2015-16 atleast 1339 people were killed in Odisha due to lightning, fire, sun stroke, cyclone, flood, whirl wind, drowning, boat capsize, snake bite and last slide. Death due to such reasons were recorded at 2702 in the year 2018-19 whereas this figure touched 2291 mark in the year 2019-20.

As per official data in the year 2019-20 atleast 974 people lost their life due to drowning whereas 759 were killed in snake bite. In the same year because of lightning atleast 326 people were killed whereas fire accident took 92 lives.

Death due to sun stroke is reducing despite climate change. In the year 2015-16 atleast 63 people lost their lives in sun stroke whereas such figure was recorded as 32 in the year 2019-20.

In the last year itself cyclone took 66 precious lives in Odisha whereas due to flood and whirl wind atleast 23 people were killed.

In the very same year due to drowning 974 persons lost their lives in our state whereas due to boat capsize 16 people, land slide 3 people and snake bite 759 heads were taken.

Because of pro-active steps taken by administration casualties during sun stroke, flood and cyclone were reduced.

In the meantime, to save people from lightningdeath warning messages are sent to people through SMS.

However, despite medical preparedness as some people are relying upon witch craft due to blind belief number of death due tosnake bite is still remain higher side.
