Helpline For Senior Citizens

State Government has been requested to set up a Helpline for Senior Citizens to address their grievances and help them with necessary interventions.

This Helpline will be in local language and will be integrated with implementing authorities at field levelof the State and will be well connected to National Helpline.

Thanks to the decision of the Union Government in setting up a National Helpline for Senior Citizens, the State Helpline will be a part of the National Network.

Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJE) has decided to fund the program entirely for the time being and has asked the State Government to set up the Helpline.

Secretary, MoSJE, R Subrahmanyam has pointed out that the Union Government has chalked out National Action Plan for Senior Citizens (NAPSrC) and under the Action Plan, setting up of National Helpline is there.

MoSJE has brought to the attention of the State Government about the requirement of such a Helpline.

This Helpline will be able to provide a two-way communication mechanism with the Senior Citizens, listening to them and addressing their grievances including that of abuse and abandonment on the one hand and also providing information regarding the Maintenance and Welfare of Senior citizen Act.

Setting up of the Helpline will make a positive difference to the lives of Senior Citizens by creating reliable network, which will act as a platform for redressing the grievances of the Senior Citizens.

This will act as a Grievance Redressal Mechanism for the Senior Citizens and will build up hope and trust amongst them.

Helpline will provide details of information about their requirement and will create scope for Policy Change and facilitate Implementation Mechanism, officials say.

Call Centres will be set up for collection of information and it will be uploaded in the State Helpline.

Calls received form the Senior Citizens for intervention will be recorded for information and necessary action.

State Authorities will proactively follow up resolution of grievances and connecting to the ground service delivery partners, where intervention is needed.

On the Ground Service Delivery, Sub Collectors, who is the authorised officer to implement the Act, NGOs, Filed Functionaries will be roped in and dedicated team of officers will work in tandem, officials say.

State Helpline will actively engage with elderly persons and help them out during their distress.

Timeline for setting up State helpline has been stipulated and if the State Government agrees to set up such facility at an early date, it will be included in the Phase-I.

State of Telengana has taken a lead in this regard and other states are requested for follow up action.

While as per Census 2011, the population of Senior Citizens in the Country was 10.38 Crore, which is expected to increase 24 Crore by 2041.

Keeping this in view, Union Government has requested the States to come out with State helpline at an early date, said sources.
