Tech Tools For Prisons

State Government has decided to opt for new technological tools for its Prisons keeping in view the Novel Corona Virus (COVID-19) Pandemic.

DG Prisons Santosh Upadhyay held discussions with senior officials of the State Prison Administration on 11 June.

Under 5T Carter, existing infrastructure on Video Conferencing with Courts, e-Prisons, e-Mulakats are being reinforced in the Prisons.

In fact, the State Government has earmarked funds to strengthen the facilities, security, infrastructure and housing aspects of the 86 Prisons across the State.

As per official reports, keeping COVID-19 Pandemic in view, for the first time Jails will be equipped with Organic Waste Convertors, Dry Cleaning Equipment(Washer Extractors) to wash linens used by Prisoners, Sprayer Machines and Vacuum Cleaners, Floor Scrubbers for sanitizing purpose.

All the above items will be procured through GeM of Government of India at competitive prices.

Besides above LED Search Lights, CCTV Cameras, and other infrastructure will be in place, officials said.

Looking at the congestion in the Prisons, Jail Administration has taken up decongestion of Jails in Malkangiri, Jeypore, Nuapada, Sambalpur, Baliguda, Phulbani, Kodala, Berhampur, and Banki keeping in view the Social Distancing.

While ‘Zero Tolerance’ on corruption, occurrence of any type of clandestine activities, violence, violation of custodial rights inside Prisons are taken seriously, pointed out DG Prisons Mr.Upadhyay.

DG Prisons has urged all the SPs, DCPs and District Collectors to collect intelligence in this regard and conduct surprise raids to insulate Prisons and keep these institutions free from contrabands, mobile etc.

Stringent disciplinary action has been taken against the Prison Personnel found involved in undisciplined conduct, officials say.

Comprehensive Policy on transfer and posting of Prison Personnel is being formulated to disciplining wrongdoers and ensuring proper accountability and responsibility, said the official.

While timely grievance and welfare activities of Prison Personnel are redressed, residential satisfaction for them has been given a boost with new residential projects coming up at 44 Prisons across the State.In the meantime, as social welfare measure, Rs.16 lakhs has been earmarked for rehabilitation and self-employment generation for the convicts and BPL Family Members, officials reveal.

Two new Prisons of 500 Capacity each will be activated soon during this year, which will increase Prison strength to 88.
