Utkal Janani Gets Status

In a historic step, the Odisha Government on 7 June, 2020 has accorded State Song status to ‘Bande Utkal Janani’, the patriotic poem of Kantakabi Laxmikanta Mohapatra. ‘Bande Utkal Janani’ means…Worship Mother Land Utkal, the ancient name of Odisha.

A resolution in this regard was approved at the State Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik here. The cabinet meeting was held through video conferring while the Chief Minister remained at his residence and other members in the Lok Seva Bhavan, said Parliamentary Affairs Minister Bikram Kesari Arukha.
“Responding to a call by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, the Odia people across the globe sang ‘Bande Utkala Janani…’ to boost morale of the Corona warriors at 5.30 pm on May 30. The entire Odisha beginning from villages to cities was reverberated with the song and it showed people’s love for Odia race,” Mr.Arukha said.
Interestingly, Odisha Government has received around 10 lakh video clips sent by people from Odisha while singing ‘Bande Utkala Janani.
Bande Utkala Janani… is a timeless creation of legendary Odia poet Lakhmikanata Mohapatra, popularly known as of Odisha’s Kanta Kabi.
The song is full of patriotism as well as inspiring one for Odias to move forward in life. The State will remain obliged to the great poet for his selfless effort to bind entire Odia race and language in a single thread, Mr.Arukha said.
Bande Utkala Janani is being recited in every function of Utkala Sammilani even before creation of separate Odisha State in April 1, 1936. The song has already made its home in hearts of each and every Odias.
On 9 November , 1994, the Government led by the then Chief Minister Biju Patnaik had decided a meeting chaired by the thenOdisha Legislative Assembly Speaker Judhistir Dash to sing Bande Utkala Janani…as the concluding song on concluding day of every Assembly session in Odisha. Since then, it is being sung in the Assembly, Mr.Arukha said.
As per the decision taken today, the State Government has accepted the complete song written by Kanta Kabi as the State Song.
The particular tone and style in which the song will be sung will be decided by State I&PR Department, the cabinet decided adding that song will be played or sung at different official programs and Assembly sessions without lyre
The State Song will be played or sung with lyre in schools, colleges, meetings, cultural events. Whenever it is sung or played, all shall stand to attention.
However, senior citizens, patients, infants, persons with physically challenged and pregnant women are exempted from the rule, it is said.
The song will be played on various occasions with different lyres including police band, flute and sitar and there will be no restrictions on creative presentation for promoting Bande Utkal Janani.
The School & Mass Education Department and Higher Education Department are directed to include the State Song in school and college curriculum, Mr.Arukha said
