State Government has asked the Heads of the Banks operating in the State to make available adequate cash at bank Branches and ATMs, so that people will not face any hardship due to cash crunch.

Ashok Kumar Meena, Principal Secretary Finance held talks with Reserve Bank of India officials and State Level Banker’s Committee (SLBC) State Convener and others in this regard said an official.

Mr.Meena also held talks with senior officials of the Department of Finance and accordingly PK Biswal, Special Secretary Finance has requested RBI Regional Director and SLBC Convener to smoothen functioning of banks and make availability of cash in ATMs.

As per India Meteorological Department (IMD) Forecast, an extremely severe cyclonic storm-Amphan is likely to affect Odisha Coast from 18-20 May and it may affect nearly 12 Districts in the State.

He said that the people of the cyclone anticipated districts may receive various government assistances.

Assistances like, Relief Assistance, House Building Assistance and Crop Loan Assistance are received in the bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

Further, now Government of India and State Government are providing various assistances to the people in this outbreak of COVID-19 Pandemic.

After getting government assistance in their bank account, people will withdraw money from their banks to purchase their requirements even before the onset of the cyclone.

There is every possibility of heavy withdrawal of cash by the people of the districts for consumption, relief and restoration work.

For this reason, functioning of banks and availability of cash at the level of Bank Branches, ATMs, Customer Service Point (CSP) and Banking Correspondent (BC)s during and aftermath of cyclone ‘Amphan’ in the cyclone anticipated districts is very much essential.

Further, all branches may be advised to keep power back up like generators and adequate additional network for internet in case the cyclone will affect the coastal districts.

Accordingly, necessary instructions to all controlling Heads of Banks operating in Odisha for smooth functioning of banks and to take immediate steps for availability of adequate cash in Bank Branches/ATMs/CSPs and BCs in the cyclone anticipated districts to avoid problem of cash crunch and inconvenience of the people of these districts in case the cyclone affect the state during this critical period of COVID-19.
