State Allows Bus Ply

Odisha Government has decided to start bus services in Green Zone with vehicles carrying 50 per cent of their full capacity, said Pradeep Jena, ACS Disaster Management and Special Relief Commissioner (SRC).

Mr.Jena said Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has allowed plying of buses with 50 Percent of their seating capacity.

They will ply on Green Zones without passing through the territory of Red and Orange Zones, said ACS Disaster Management..

Buses will ply in the Green Zones while fulfilling other statutory requirements such as valid route permit, registration certificate, and fitness certificate, said he.

There nearly 15,000 passenger buses which are idle since the lockdown was imposed in the state on 22 March.

While running buses utilizing 50 Percent will not be economical, Odisha Bus Owners Association has expressed reluctance to run vehicles with half the capacity fearing losses.

"We have already decided to operate the buses and a proposal in this regard has been sent to the Chief Minister for approval. We hope, the Chief Minister will accept the proposal and buses will run as usual in 16 districts where there is no trace of COVID-19 so far, Minister Transport said.

Of the 30 districts of Odisha, 16 districts are in the Green Zone while 16 districts are under orange zone and three other districts - Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur and Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation have been categorized as Red Zone.

The districts which are in the Green Zone are Angul, Bargarh, Boudh, Sambalpur, Gajapati, Jagatsinghpur, Kandhamal, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Rayagada, Sonepur, Cuttack and Puri.
