Curfew For Care

No politics please! Like many previous occasions, Odisha Chief Minister and ruling BJD President Naveen Patnaik supported Prime Minister and BJP veteran Narendra Modi’s efforts to combat the killer disease which has claimed more than 10,000 human lives across the globe. Modi has called for a “Janata Curfew” on March 22 (Sunday) and Naveen, who was among the firsts to advocate for social distancing to avoid the disease, was smart enough to support the move. “Extraordinary circumstances demand extraordinary response,” Naveen said adding that COVID-19 is a challenge for the entire human race. “Let all join as one nation and support the appeal of PM,” Naveen said.

Though Naveen was often criticized for supporting Modi’s Citizenship Amendment Act and other such legislation, this time the BJD President rose above politics and wholeheartedly supported the Prime Minister. While a section of Congress leaders were critical to Modi’s call for making sound by standing on balconies, none of them have opposed to the idea of “Janata Curfew” when the people across the country will keep themselves indoors for a day in order to break the chain of coronavirus’s spread. One should understand that the life of a coronavirus is limited between three hours to 72 hours. However, the medical researchers say that a coronavirus mostly remains active for 36 hour and in next 36 hours it becomes inactive. Mr.Modi’s call on Sunday aimed at keeping people indoors for at least 36 hours from March 21 night till March 23 morning.

If the entire country will remain in quarantine within their houses, coronavirus may not get any opportunity to gain strength and move on to another person. If the virus remains falling at any place (be it in bus, shops or public places) for 36 hours, it faces natural death. Therefore, Mr.Modi’s Janata Curfew is likely to help curb the disease and comfort people, worried for Virus spread. If one person moves from one place to another, coronavirus gets legs and keep on spreading through human beings. In case, the entire country keeps itself inside house and observe norms, them, most of the active virus will die down or become inactive in a span of 36 hours.

Therefore, Naveen’s support to Modi’s “Janata Curfew” is justified and all should come forward and keep inside house on Sunday. This will also help all busy persons to give most valuable time for their families. Therefore, there should be no hesitation to support “Janata Curfew” which in other words may be called “Care For You.”

It is Coronavirus that has made the entire globe to stand on its feet so also India and Odisha. Beginning from Kerala to Kashmir and Odisha to Uttrakhand, all are awake and preparing on how to combat the killer disease which has no vaccine or the medicine. The Corona continues to engulf heads after heads, be it Chinese, Japanese, American Italian or Indian.

The Coronavirus makes equal both rich, ultra-rich poor and poverty stricken. It has no discretion.  Though medical science has reached its zenith, it has not been able to invent any medicine against COVID-19 even after death of 10,000 people across the globe. If one is aware on the history of epidemics, he will not forget the Spanish Flu which infected 200 million of people and killed 50 million in 1918-19. Like Spanish Flu, coronavirus too has no such vaccine in 2019-20. Therefore, it will continue spreading till it naturally dies out like other epidemics.

Like all other natural calamities, coronavirus spread has also hit hard the entire economy, be him rich or poor, but the worst victims were poorest section of the society who earn their livelihood by doing menial jobs, vendors, rickshaw pullers, bus cleaners and taxi & auto-rickshaw drivers. No body, including Modi or Naveen knows how long the present situation will prevail. However, Odisha Government’s Chief Spokesperson on COVID-19 Subroto Bagchi used to say that the state needs to remain prepared for at least six months. He is, like rest of the world, also not sure when the coronavirus will bid farewell from the earth. In the meantime time International experts say everybody should be prepared for at least for 12-18 Months!

Many people keep on saying and counting on the human tragedy. But the economic consequences may be too unbearable because the poor men will be worst sufferer in the global recession. As the disease spread and markets shut down, millions avoid going to work because of fear, bad health or lack of transport.

It is high time that the State Government should come out with ‘Economic Package for daily wage earners and those who eke out a living doing odd jobs. During the time of cyclones such packages are extended to the vulnerable people. State Government has been kind to provide welfare pension and cheap rice for poor at an early date, which is a welcome step. And keeping Aahar Centres open and extending timeline is a great relief to the people getting unemployed due to closedown of small shops, hotels and other establishments.

If at all the situation becomes normal after few months, many plants, factories and other infrastructure projects will face worker shortage. The people, who have returned to their villages in wake of the corona outbreak, may face pressure from family members not to return to their earlier place of work. Similarly, the foreigners who came to India for different works, may not get the same affection as they used enjoy earlier.

As many people in Odisha call COVID-19 as “Chinese Bemari”, they have developed impression unhealthy life style caused Coronavirus. Many families may not prefer to allow their children or relatives work in other countries. One day, coronavirus will have to admit defeat and say “Namaste”, but it has left clear message to the entire world that Indian life style is most hygienic and healthy among all civilizations prevalent in the world.

The present generation people also say they do not know when Lord Jagannath’s Lions’ Gate was closed for the devotees. This is corona effect that has forced the administration to restrict devotees from temples, churches, mosques and gurudwaras. The people, who wholeheartedly support the government’s actions both in the country as well as in the state, have in fact shown great maturity in understanding the issue and working in the direction to end the killer called ‘Covid-19’ and people understand that this curfew is for their comfort and good health, which Prime Minister is wishing all the time.
