Cash Push For ATMs

While the State Administration is on overdrive  in taking measures to beat the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), it has asked Reserve Bank of India to see that all the Commercial Banks are needed to ensure that sufficient cash be available in bank branches and the ATMs as well.

Ashok Kumar Meena, Principal Secretary Finance held discussions with senior officials of the State Government to apprise Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in this regard.

Accordingly PK Biswal Special Secretary Finance has written to the RBI Authorities and said the State Government has been taking many proactive steps in preventive health care and siocial protection measures.

The social protection measures including establishment of isolation centres, payment of ex-gratia and release of old age pension in advance will involve substantial disbursement from the treasuries.

“Since it is a crucial time, public may also require more cash in hand. Keeping this in view, it is requested to make available sufficient cash in the currency chests, bank branches, ATM counters across the State to meet the exigencies. It may be ensured that no bank/ATM counter goes without cash in near future,” the State Government’s letter urged.

The State Government’s immidiate action came following allegations from public that certain ATMs remain dry due to shut down as a precautionary measure.

RBI in its COVID-19 Guidelines has advised the banks to encourage their customers to use digital banking facilities as far as possible.
