NGT Asks Mahanadi Report

National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered for On The Spot Inquiry by a Three Member Team over continuous encroachment of Mahanadi River Bed at Ratilo in Kishan Nagar Tahasil, in Salepur Block of Cuttack District.

A Divison Bench of NGT comprising of Justice S P Wangdi, Judicial Member and Sidhanta Das, Expert Member on 16 March has directed constitution of a Committee comprising of Secretary Water Resources, District Collector Cuttack and Representative of Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) for Joint Inspection of the area and verify on the factual aspects and submit a report before 16 April.

Dipak Kumar Samantaray filed a complaint in NGT about continious encroachment and  ongoing construction of Panchamukhi Hanuman Temple, Threshing Ground, proposed construction of concrete structures such as Toilet, Graveyard, Market Complex, Kalyani Manadap and other activities that adversely affects the river ecology and disturbs the river flow.
 
Further the application raises the substantial question relating to environment because there is a threat to the free flow and ecology of Mahanadi. 
 
He has also quoted a letter of Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC) Central Division, which pointed out the infractions and the likely damage that weould be caused to the environment including obstruction of flow of river water of Mahanadi.

Next Date of Hearing the case by NGT is on 16 April.
