BPNSI Moving To Steel Hub

Union Government has decided to shift Biju Patnaik National Steel Institute (BPNSI) from Puri to Kalinga Nagar, where Steel Hub is being established.

With Union Minister Petroleum Natural Gas and Steel, Dharmendra Pradhan harping on the setting up of First Steel Hub of India in Kalinga Nagar shifting BPNSI there will useful for the Steel Industry, feel officials.

BPNSI is being run by Ministry of Steel and as a Massive Steel Hub is coming up there, it has requested the State Government to allocate 50 acres of land in Kalinga Nagar so that BPNSI can be shifted and set up in a proper place.

BPNSI was set up by Ministry of Steel in 2002 for the development of Steel Sector with an emphasis on the Secondary Steel Sector.

The Institute had adopted a three pronged approach, namely Education & Training, Research & Development, and Consultancy to boost the steel sector.

Affiliated to AICTE, BPNSI is offering Advanced Certificate Course on Iron and Steel Manufacturing.

However, the Institute was not taking off after so many years of its establishment and now as the MoS is taking up Steel Hub in Kalinga Nagar, it will be in synergy with the initiative to set up BPNSI in the proposed Hub.

Secondly MoS has decided to set up a Steel Skill Development Centre, which first of its kind will come up along with BPNSI.

Steel Skill Development Centre(SSDC) will be set up by BPNSI and it will cater to the requirement of the Steel Sector.

Senior officials of the Ministry of Steel are in contact with the State Government officials in this regard, said sources.

BPNSI along with its SSDC will be able to generate massive pool of skilled workforce of young boys and girls, who will work for the Steel Sector, officials say.

International organizations providing training in steel sector will be roped in for SSDC and youth will be provided training keeping at the World Steel Market in picture.

Many Steel Clusters will come up in the Steel Hub and with the development of Steel Industry, vocational training is necessary, which will be provided by the SSDC, officials say.

Steel Clusters will be an Industrial Park with an anchor Integrated Steel Plant Tenant which provides semi finished products to the downstream and ancillary industries.

With a target to produce 300 Million Ton of Steel Per Annum (MTPA), Government of India wants to promote Greenfield Steel Complexes and also expand the capacity of the Brownfield Projects.

While demand for steel is on rise and it is expected that by 2030, steel demand will rise up to 230 MTPA.

Keeping this in view, MoS is taking all sorts of steps to improve the capacity and boost the downstream industries.

Under this backdrop, shifting of BPSNI and setting up of SSDC by the National Institute will go a long way in serving the Steel Sector, feel officials.
