Biju Saved Kashmir

After giving its full support to Kashmir issues in both the Houses of the Parliament, Odisha’s BJD made its point during the debate in Lok Sabha.

The party used the opportunity to reiterate its demand of according Bharat Ratna to legendary Biju Patnaik.
The issue was raised by BJD’s Parliamentary Party leader and Puri MP Pinaki Mishra while speaking on the Kashmir issue.
Mr.Mishra recalled how Biju Patnaik played a significant role in retaining Kashmir with India.
Informing the House that Biju Babu was an expert apart from being a statesman, the BJD MP said: “Biju Babu came out as a savior of Srinagar.
When in 1948, Pakistani attacked Kashmir, killing and looting people in Srinagar, an Instrument of Accession was signed by the last king, Maharaja Hari Singh.
When things were out of control and Pakistani attackers all set to capture Kashmir, the the Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru asked Biju Babu to do something to save the valley.
On the dawn of October 27, 1947, Biju Babu landed at Srinagar airport with 17 soldiers of Sikh Regiment. He had to fly the aircraft very low in order to ensure whether the attackers had captured the airport also.
Nehru had categorically told Biju Babu to ensure that the airport was out of enemy’s reach before making landing. During the day, Biju Babu made several sorties and ensured that maximum soldiers reach Kashmir to defeat the attackers.
Mr.Mishra said the Kashmir was saved and protected from the enemies. Thanks to Biju Babu because it was then not possible to rush soilders through roads. The only way was air. Biju’s courage was then lauded by all including Nehru.
Kashmir was saved for the India.
Maharaja Hari Singh was not interested either to merge with India or Pakistan. He wanted to keep Kashmir independent state. However, that was nopt possible due to Pakistani attack.
Therefore, Maharaja Hari Singh had a deal with Nehru for which Jammu and Kashmiri state had separate flag and different Constitution.
The state was given special status through Article 370.
Accordingly, none of the India’s Constitution like Article-1 and Article-370 was in force in J&K. However, during the deal, India had made it clear the article 370 was purely temporary
