CMC On Green Drive

CMC Commissioner Ananya Das is on Green Drive with an aim to restore the green covers lost in the Millennium City.

City lost its green cover due to extremely severe cyclone Fani and now the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) in collaboration with State Forest and Environment Department has launched an unique project ‘Parent A Plant’ in the Millennium City.

Ms.Das is hyperactive and the civic body has set a target to plant a whopping 6,000 saplings in different parts of the city in the first phase campaign of the project.

It started from Madhukunj park in the city from 5 July, on the occasion of ‘Van Mahostav’ in presence of CMC officials, green activists, environmentalists and citizens.

The project aims to encourage individuals to not just plant but raise trees. This will allow the trees to get the needed care ensuring successful restoration of the lost tree cover in Cuttack.

“The aim of the project is not only to restore the green cover lost in cyclone Fani but to generate a greater community involvement in preserving and planting more trees to make Cuttack greener beside increasing the sense of responsibility and ownership ,” Ms.Das said ‘Parenting a plant’ will enable in taking proper care of it like they take care of their own children.

Under this plantation drive an individual will become the ‘Parent’ or ‘Guardian’ of a particular plant which can gets the required care and attention for growth and preservation, she added.

“Under the project, step has been initiated for plantation of around 8-10 feet tall trees of different varieties having greater cyclone-resistance such as Neem, Karanja, Baula, Jamu, Korila, Chatian, Khaira, Arjun, Mahyoni, Ashok, Harida, Bahada, Shisu, Katha Champa and Dimiri in Parks, roadsides and open spaces across the city,” informed City Division DFO Ashok Kumar Mishra.

Both Ms.Das and Mr.Mishra have urged the youth, school and college goers to take part in the project to increase the green infrastructure in the city.
