1066 Steel Plants In India

Union Minister Steel, Dharmendra Pradhan has said that there are 1066 Steel Plants in the country run both by the Public and Private Sector.


Mr.Pradhan, while replying in a written reply in Lok Sabha on 1 July, said that in Public Sector there are 09 Steel Complexes.

These Steel Plants are run by Centre Owned PSU, Steel authority of India Limited (SAIL) and Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL).

In Odisha there is one SAIL run Steel Plant at Rourkela and in Private Sector there are 68 Plants.

Jharkhand is having largest 139 Plants in Private Sector and 01 in Bokaro run by SAIL.

West Bengal has 46 Private run steel Mills and three Public Sector run Steel Plants.

Those are Durgapur steel Plant, IISCO Steel Plant, Burnpur and Alloy Steel Plant, Durgapur. In Eastern Region there are 313 Steel Plants are there.

In Western region there are 245 Steel Mills and Chhattisgarh is leading with 77 Steel Plants, followed by Maharashtra with 64 and Gujarat with 59 Steel Mills.

Madhya Pradesh has 10, GOA has got 14 and Dadra and Nagar Haveli has 18 Steel Plants.

Northern Region has got 261 Steel Mills out of which Punjab has highest of 119 followed by Uttar Pradesh with 41 and Rajasthan is having 39 Steel Complexes.

Southern Region has 238 Steel Plants and Tamil Nadu has got 101 Steel Mills.

Odisha’s, neighbour Andhra Pradesh has only 29 and Karnataka has also 29 Steel Milles.

Among the Public Sector Steel Plants, Odisha is having Rourkela Steel Plant, West Bengal has One Plant at Burnpur and two at Durgapur, Jharkhand has Public Sector Steel Mill at Bokaro.

Tamil Nadu has got SAIL controlled Salem Steel Plant at Salem and Karnataka has Visvesverya Iron & Steel Plant.

Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) is having a Steel Plant at Vizag, Vishakhapatnam Steel Plant.

Minister Mr.Pradhan admitted that to promote a Steel Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) in Jharkhand, an MoU was signed between Ministry of Steel and Government of Jharkhand on 28 June, 2015.

However, owing to non-allocation of captive iron ore mine lease by State Government, the Steel Plant could not be set up, admitted Union Minister.
