In a move for improving nutritional consumption, the Odisha Government has decided to distribute one kilogram of Ragi at Re 1 among the PDS cardholders in seven districts of the State on pilot basis.

 
A decision to this effect was taken at the Odisha Millet Mission meeting held under the chairmanship of State Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi at State Secretariat here today.
 
The Chief Secretary directed to pilot the Ragi distribution in Gajapati, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nuapada and Rayagada districts in July.
 
The cardholders in Malkangiri district would be provided 2 Kgs of ragi.
 
Mr.Padhi further asked the Millet Mission to promote consumption of Ragi in urban areas through tie-up with bakeries, biscuit manufacturers, sweet stalls and mega retail counters in the State.
Meanwhile, Development Commissioner Asit Kumar Tripathy directed the concerned authorities to create awareness among the cardholders about availability of Ragi in fair price shops.
 
Agriculture Production Commissioner Gagan Kumar Dhal, Principal Secretary, Agriculture) Saurabh Garg, Cooperation Secretary Krishan Kumar, senior officers of Millet Mission, TDCC and Food & Civil Supplied Department were among others participated in the deliberations.
The State Government also decided to procure around 1 lakh quintals of Ragi from the farmers in the Kharif season this year at minimum support price of Rs 2,897 per quintal.
“The prime objective of Government intervention is to fetch good market price to the Ragi farmers and to prohibit any distress sale,” said the Chief Secretary.


As many as 24,499 farmers were registered and verified in Kharif-2018 for procurement of Ragi, informed Agriculture Director M Muthukumar adding that of these, 6,622 farmers sold their surplus product to TDCC.

The procurement was done through 68 societies in 8 districts at an MSP of Rs 2897 per quintal, he further stated.
