Meher Faces Criminal Case

State Police has slapped a criminal case against the First Time Lawmaker, who forced sit-ups a Junior Engineer.

The newly elected BJD MLA, did sit-ups of JE in public, and he claimed on 8 June that the Lawmaker had even asked an Executive Engineer to slap him.
The District Police has registered a case against the Lawmaker.

The alleged "rowdism" of Saroj Kumar Meher, first-time MLA from Patnagarh in Bolangir district, also triggered a row with the opposition BJP coming down heavily on the BJD Government and demanding immediate arrest of the Lawmaker and the Congress condemning the incident.

Mr.Meher, who drew flak after a video purportedly showed him forcing a tribal-born, Junior Engineer of Department of Works to do sit-ups in public went viral, on 7 June apologised for his action, claiming he did so to assuage public anger.

Later on Thursday, the JE’s wife lodged a complaint with the police against the BJD MLA, accusing him of publicly humiliating her husband after calling him out of his home on Wednesday.

"We have registered a case against the MLA at Patnagarh Police Station after proper verification. The case has been registered under different sections of the IPC and SC, ST Atrocity Act," Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Patnagarh Suresh Nayak told Media.

The SDPO said, "We have traced him and handed him over to his family. He was located at a place between Kantabanji and Khariar. He had gone there with friends and was not kidnapped as alleged by the wife."

After returning home, the JE claimed he was forced to do sit-ups by the MLA, who also asked an executive engineer to slap him in the presence of villagers.

"The MLA asked my Executive Engineer to slap me in the presence of all. The Executive Engineer might have slapped to save me from the angry people who complained of poor quality of road construction work," the JE said.

The family members and relatives of the junior engineer have demanded immediate arrest and stringent action against the MLA for his "highhandedness". The Bolangir District Adivasi Manch has also demanded immediate arrest of the lawmaker.

BJP's State Secretary Lekhasri Samantasinghar hit out at Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for being silent on the episode.
