SAIL Poles For Odisha

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has come to rescue to the power battered zones of Odisha, which was hard hit by Extremely Severe Cyclonic
Storm-FANI.

The Central PSU has decided to supply 60,000 Poles to the State within next six days, which is really a daunting task. But SAIL has done it and it has started supplying poles from 11 May, said Secretary Energy Hemant Sharma.

Director Commercial of SAIL, Soma Mandal rushed to Bhubaneswar to assure the supply of steel poles, which will be utilized in FANI ravaged Districts of Puri, Khorda, Cuttack, Jagatisnghpur Kendrapda and others.

After FANI devastated the entire Power Infrastructure in the several coastal districts of the State, Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi flagged the concern at National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) headed by Cabinet Secretary, Pradeep Kumar Sinha.

Mr.Sinha immediately directed Union Secretary Steel to organize such a huge amount of steel poles urgently required in Odisha.

He had also asked the Railway Board Chairman to arrange Special Railway Rakes from the Steel Complex of SAIL to Odisha.

Movement of Steel Poles in Rail Rakes were being monitored by the senior officials in Cabinet Secretariat, said sources.

Odisha Government placed order with SAIL authorities with specific requirements of Steel Poles of high quality keeping in view the saline impact it will have in coming times.

Accordingly SAIL authorities set a Special Rolling Process at its Durgapur Steel Plant looking at the requirement of the State.

Quality Improvement was done looking at the saline corrosion and poles are being rolled out, said sources.

While normally PSC Concrete Poles are utilized in Coastal Districts due to saline issues, but to handle a concrete pole requires 10-12 labourers, however these lighter and sturdy steel poles are handled by 4-5 labourers.

Secondly to produce 60,000 PSC Concrete poles it will take at least six months, which will be done in six days time!

These steel poles are of various sizes as required by the Electricity Authorities, which are laying the poles in the power battered zones.

Firstly SAIL has provided 1000 steel poles and on 11 May a railway rake filled with hundreds of steel poles reached at Tangi, where SAIL has its yard.

The train directly came from Durgapur and reached Odisha non stop and similar trains will come from the Steel Plant, assured Director Commerce, SAIL Ms.Mandal.

Ms.Mandal is coordinating with the State Authorities and Director Technical of SAIL has also reached Odisha to supervise the arrangements, said sources.

SAIL support has come in a big way for the State, admits Secretary Energy, Mr.Sharma, who is supervising the entire power restoration program in these districts.
