Benevolent Set For Test

Located in the borders of Chhattisgarh, Bhatli Assembly segment in Bargarh district, is witnessing a different elections this time as the sitting Lawmaker and Minister Energy Susanta Singh has been seeking re-election.

Susanta Singh does not have a great height or look. But, this frail and thin man stands tall among the contestant in Bhatli Assembly segment.

Mr.Singh is not tall because he is a Minister, but as a man loved by one and all except the rival BJP workers and leaders. The people in opposition love to hate this man because of his popularity which is growing by the day.

“Susanta Singh is a benevolent person. There is no one in the constituency who has been denied help by him. Whoever seeks help, be it medical expense, poor man’s daughter marriage or study of need students, Mr.Singh is the ultimate person to help,” said Prakash Barik, who runs Adhunik Saloon.

Susanta, as the name suggests is a cool man, but instantly gets angry when he comes across injustice, says Mr.Barik.

Though Mr.Singh does not want to highlight his good works, people close to him claim that the Minister takes care of studies of many needy students from Bhatli, Sohela and Ambadhona blocks in his assembly segment, said a retired teacher, Yudhistir Seth.

Mr.Singh is aware that some block grant teachers may not vote him or the BJD, but he is cool and understands their problem. He is confident that people will ultimately vote him.

According to Bijaya Kumar Duan, the Odisha’s Labour Minister has done a great service to the people here as he could effectively check migration of people to other places.

As Minister Labour and ESI, he has ensured that the working class people get jobs cards and get employment to eke out their living.

“We cannot claim that migration has completely stopped. This year only four people have gone on migration in comparision to 40 people in previous years. This could be possible due to Mr.Singh’s efforts,” one of the villagers said in Bhukta, which used to send more than a dozen laborers every year, which has come down to a few.

The people of Bargarh during migration work as brick kiln workers in neighboring Andhra Pradesh. A youth from Bhukta village four years ago had gone to Andhra Pradesh and returned home after being physically tortured. The youth is still mentally sick and unable to go out of home.

And he is the sole bread earner of the family and the distressed family is facing penury, admits mother of Kartik Mahgula, who suffered the trauma during his hard days in Andhra Pradesh.

Such incidents disturbed Mr.Singh who as the Minister ordered the labour & ESI department to provide facilities and generate awareness so that least people from his constituency go to work outside the state.

Congress candidate Saroj Mahapatra is fighting a tough battle with little resouces and support base.

Pitted against Mr.Singh is BJP’s Irasis Acharya. He is more known as son of Dr Sunil Acharya, who runs Navajiban Chikitshalay in Bhatli.

Dr Acharya has been serving the poor and needy since 1945 and he is known in the locality for benevolent works.

The poor and hapless people of Bhatli have emotional attachment with the doctor who may vote for the BJP candidate. However, Dr Acharya was reluctant to campaign for his son.

Anyway, this Assembly constituency witness fight between two benevolent persons, one Mr.Singh and another Mr.Acharya, whose strength is his father, a noble physician serving the poor.
