Relocate AWC In School

With a view to facilitate small kids to go to school, a move is on to relocate Anganwadi Centre(AWC)s to the campus of Primary Schools.

This will facilitate the transition to the children to Primary Stage and ensure Universal Enrolment.

Union Government has advised the State Government to take up relocation of the AWCs, so that more and more kids will be smotthly transit to Primary Schools.

Secretary Women & Child Development, Rakesh Srivastava has written to the State Government in this regard.

Mr.Srivastava said the Union Government has sanctioned 14 Lakh AWCs to various states, including Odisha.

Out of these 14 Lakh AWCs 13.53 AWCs are operational as on today, said he.
AWCs are run through Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS), which is the largest child care program in the world.

This is the most unique outreach program providing a package of services, including supplementary nutrition, health care, pre school non formal education etc.

Under this backdrop, Ministry of Women & Child Development (MoWCD)and Ministry of Human Resources Development have joined hands to scale up Universal Enrolment.

Accordingly Department of School Education and Literacy along with MoWCD have worked out strategies for taking up activities in this regard.

Many AWCs are running in rented buildings and far from the Primary Schools, which comes as a deterrent for smooth transition from AWC to Primary Schools Learning.

So the State Government has been advised to chalk out a detailed program to relocate the AWCs to the campus of the nearby Primary Schools.

The relocation of AWCs to the campus of Primary School would also facilitate child preparedness for going to schools and help in improving  efficacy of both the flagship schemes like ICDS and Sarva Sikshya Abhiyan (SSA).
In Odisha there are 72,587 Anganwadi Centres running and out of which, 34,651 do not have their own infrastructure.
Most of these are running from rented building or even from the houses of Anganwadi Workers.
Officials say that in Ganjam district, 2964 Anganwadi Centres do not have their own infrastructure followed by Balasore (2854), Cuttack (2325), Bhadrak (1605) and Bargarh (1586).
While 13,566 Anganwadi Centre buildings are under construction, the State Government has sanctioned money for the construction of 12,156 buildings.
With Government of India insisting for relocation of AWCs to the campuses of the Primary Schools, now State Government will have to work out in details, said an officer.

Union Government has also insisted that the Primary Schools, where to the AWCs are to be relocated should be present in same habitation, where the AWCs were previously present.

A time bound action and State Report will be sent to MoWCD by the State Government in this regard, said sources.
