Raghu Joins BJP

BJD Veteran Raghunath Mohanty along with family joined the BJP on 2 April, two days after quiting the Governing Party ahead of the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the state.

Mr.Mohanty, who had resigned from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on 31 March, joined Saffron Brigade with his son and daughter in law.
Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and National Vice President Baijayant Panda and Veteran Damodar Rout were present.
Certainly an influential leader from Balasore district, Mr.Mohanty's move is seen as a major setback for the Governing BJD and a shot in the arm for BJP in the run up to theelections.
After resigning from BJD, Mr.Mohanty had alleged that the Governing Party had deviated from the lofty ideals of Biju Patnaik and that the regional outfit was now being run by a group having vested interests.
"Though I was one of the founding members of the BJD and served as a dedicated worker, the party leadership sidelined and ignored me and several other founding members. I felt that the party no more required my services. I felt hurt. Therefore, I decided to resign in order to keep self respect and pride of the people of Balasore intact,” he said.
A five-time lawmaker, Mr.Mohanty had to resign from the Ministry and was suspended from the BJD in March 2013 after he was arrested in a dowry torture case slapped by his daughter-in-law.
He was denied the party ticket in the 2014 assembly polls though he had represented Basta assembly seat for five consecutive terms since 1990.
However, he was reinstated in the party as the Vice-President in March, 2018 and made the Observer of the party affairs in Dhenkanal district.
Mr.Mohanty's resignation from BJD and entry into BJP comes as a fresh setback for the for the ruling BJD after eight-time MP and former Union Minister Arjun Sethi quit theparty and joined BJP on 30 March.

Kendrapara MP Baijayant Panda had resigned from BJD in 2018, while Nabarangpur MP Balabhadra Majhi and Kandhamal MP Pratyusha Rajeswari Singh had also resigned from the BJD last month.
