Arrear Worry For BSNL

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is facing financial stress and not able to pay electricity dues for which the Government Telecom Organization likely to face acute crisis.

This type of situation prevails in BSNL locations all over India, including in Odisha, officials admit.

Looking at the bleak scenario, CMD BSNL, Anupam Srivastava has approached the State Government to bear with BSNL for not able to pay electrical dues in time.

Arrear of BSNL, Odisha has reached Rs.4.85 Crore by 31 January, 2019 and it is on rise.

Mr.Shrivastava has written to the State Government that due to present hyper competitive telecom scenario and as there is a slight delay in paying electricity dues in time to the Distribution Companies.

In fact this precarious situation has arisen because of the cut-throat completion in Telecom market after the entry of Reliance –Jio who offered free or very cheap telecom services in order to gain market share.

The letter solicits State Government’s intervention, failing which, the Government Telecom Organisation, which is over 150 years old will crumble and will shut down.

This will be detrimental to the nation and the large customers’ base. We strongly feel that Government Telecom service providers’ presence is a must in order to keep a check on private telecom providers or else private players will have monopoly in this sector’, said a senior employees of the Telecom Behemoth.

Due to this, other telecom companies including BSNL had to revise their rates/tariffs in order not to lose an exodus of customers.

Because of downgraded tariffs, the revenue of BSNL has gone down to such a low level that BSNL is struggling even to pay the salaries of employees and because of this their operations were suffering as they did not have money to pay even the electricity bills/diesel and other operational expenses, officials admit.

This is resulting in shutting down of some of the exchanges/BTS towers resulting in poor service. Which will again result in low revenue and this will go on in a vicious cycle, officials admit.

It is in the interest of nation and customers that BSNL will continue its services.

Looking at the grim scenario, Mr.Shrivastava has requested that suitable instructions is needed to be issued to the DISCOMs concerned keeping in mind the large interest and security of the Nation at this crucial point when there is tension with the neighboring country.

And most importantly as the country is going for General elections and Odiosha is facing Assembly polls, ensuring BSNL service is need of the hour.

So DISCOMs are needed to given necessary directions by the State Government not to resort to unpleasant action of disconnection of electricity at vital telecom installations of BSNL across the State, said CMD BSNL.

Mr.Shrivastava has assured that electricity dues will be paid sooner or later in usual manner as BSNL is an Union Government Public Sector Undertaking (PSU).
