Icons To Attract Voters

CEO Odisha is all set to ensure increased participation of voters in the ensuing general elections by generating awareness among the voters.


State-level Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) Committee chaired by Chief Electoral Officer Surendra Kumar has decided to utilize the services of Icons in Odisha for this purpose.

A long list of State Icons in different fields has been sent to the Election Commission of India for approval. They will be involved in voter education programs to be conducted across the State.

The Icons include- athlete Duti Chand, Para-athlete Jayanti Behera, Para-badminton star Pramod Bhagat, eminent singer Ruturaj Mohanty, Odia film actress Shivani Sangita and cine actor Swaraj.

Through scheduled programs they will influence young voters to come forward in large numbers and participate in the upcoming colourful festival of the largest democracy of the world.

During the apex SVEEP committee meeting, it was revealed that SVEEP committees have been formed in 2908 schools and 665 colleges for voter education among school and college students.

Similar committees have also been set up at district levels in each district under the chairmanship of district electoral officers, which are actively working to educate voters in their respective districts.
Interestingly, in the scheme of voter education the booths, which constitute the core of the voting action, are not left out.

A total number of 21,364 Chunav Pathsalas have been set up to educate the voters at the both level on the use of EVM and VVPAT.

Besides, 714 ‘Voter awareness Circles’ have been functioning through different social organizations which are engaged in educating the voters about voting through EVM with VVPAT.

Last but not least, 270 campus ambassadors have been appointed through NNS in different schools and colleges for creating voting awareness among the people.

The CEO informed the committee members that arrangements have been made to facilitate voting by the ‘divyangas’. All District Collectors have been advised to provide vehicles for their transportation to the voting centres and back home. A total number of 4,70,000 disabled persons are expected to exercise their right to franchise this time.

Officials of different departments were requested in the meeting to carry out awareness programs through radio jingles and video spot in Desia, Sambalpuri and Satali languages.

Besides it was decided to organize awareness programs at village levels by district- and block-level artist organizations.

Present in the meeting, among others included Additional CEO Sachin Ramachandra Yadav, Joint CEO Raghuram R Aiyer, I and PR Director Laxmidhar Mohanty, Odia Language, Literature and Culture Director Bijoy Kumar Nayak DD Programme Executive Dillip Kumar Sahu, AIR Cuttack ADP Tarun Kanti Rout and Programme Executive Abhoy Kumar Das.
