Cops Nab Cyber Frauds

The Crime Branch of Odisha Police has arrested two cyber fraudsters from New Delhi for duping a Baripada man to the tune of Rs.87 lakh.

The arrested accused duo are Binod Kumar Singh(52) of Jahanabad and Sanjeeb Kumar (36) of Vaishali in Bihar.

Santosh Upadhyaya, ADG Crime Branch sources said, the complainant Tapan Kumar Dash of Madhuban in Baripada alleged that a woman identifying herself as Christie Dawson of Switzerland befriended him on facebook in September 2018 and subsequently they exchanged messages in Whatsapp.

Later, she told Mr.Dash that she owned a real-estate business in Switzerland and interested in starting the same in India.

On September 26, she sent him a message that she was coming to India. Two days later, on September 28, Mr.Dash received a phone from another woman claiming herself to be the Customs Officer of Delhi Airport and informed regarding the detention of Christie Dawson along with 3 lakh pounds.

Christie Dawson then requested him to deposit the fine amount with a promise to pay back the money after release of the seized pounds.

Accordingly, Mr.Dash deposited money in the bank account given by the fake custom officer. He also deposited money in different bank accounts of the accused persons on different dates towards fine, tax, GST etc.

Mr.Dash was then informed that one United Nation agent was coming to Odisha with released pound converted to dollar.

Later, one John Skotan of South Africa claiming to be United Nation agent came to Bhubaneswar along with a small iron box and met Mr.Dash in Hotel Arya Palace where he took out some black papers from a sealed bundle it and wiped out the black colour with the help of some liquid from a broken bottle following which the black colour disappeared and looked like dollar.

John then left for Delhi to procure liquid leaving the locked iron box containing the bundles with Das who also deposited money in his account for getting the liquid.

The complainant alleged that after depositing total Rs.87 lakh and realizing that he was being cheated, he lodged complaint.

During investigation, Inspector Sujata Khandual found no lady in the name of Christie Dawson and nobody was detained in Delhi with pounds. The accused duo had fabricated the entire story to cheat the complainant.

The arrested accused duo, who were produced in Patiala House Court, were brought on transit remand and produced before JMFC court in Baripada on Tuesday, Crime Branch sources said.
