Dhanu Jatra Open

World Famous Dhanu Jatra kick started with Prasanna Acharya, MP opened the biggest Open Air Theater Show here on 11 January.

MP of Bargarh Pravash Singh, MLA Debashis Acharya, District Collector Indramani Tripathy and SP Mukesh Bhamoo graced the occasion.

“People are sure to enjoy the Jatra for coming 11 days. It is really a major platform for entertainment for the common people and farmers in particular as they have recently completed the most tiresome agricultural activities and harvesting of paddy,” said Indramani Tripathy, the District Collector Bargarh.

Dhanu Jatra, treated as the biggest open air theatre of the world has turned the River Jeera to River Jamuna and the Bargarh Town to Mathura Nagari where only King Kansa but not Lord Krishna is the centre of attraction for the people.

And the village Ambapali has turned Gopapura where Lord Krishna and Lord Balaram will perform their Balya Leela (Childhood Activities)

Although Dhanu Jatra is organized every year in the month of Pausha, but the attraction of King Kansa and Krishna and Balaram in Gopapura is interesting.

The entire Mathura Nagari comes under the rule of King Kansa
whose orders are carried out by all including the District Chief.

And any deviation of his orders is also viewed seriously and fines are imposed by Maharaj Kansa instantly.

Maharaj also moves around the entire town to take stock of the
situation in various places including important offices.

If anything odd is seen King Kansa immediately orders to rectify those and his orders are also carried instantly which is the
uniqueness of the Dhanu Jatra..

“Maharaja Kansa turns the real ruler during these 11 days,” says Sureswar Satapathy, Secretary of the Organizing Committee of Dhanu Jatra.

Legendary Biju Patnaik had to beg apology before King Kansa for his late arrival in the Ranga Mahal.

“I am the Chief Minister of a poor state. I can’t pay fine worth One Lakh Gold Coins (Swarna Mudra).

Hence, Maharaj may please excuse me for my late,” said the then Chief
Minister  in Ranga Mahal, after his late arrival.
