CB Probe On Baba

Crime Branch Chief, Santosh Upadhaya said following a request from the Commissionerate Police, the Economic Offence Wing (EOW) of the State Crime Branch on 7 January took up investigation of  two fraud cases registered against fraudster Jyoti Ranjan Beura alias ‘Golden Baba’, informed on Monday.

ADG Mr.Upadhyay said since the cases have inter-state and inter-district connections, the Commissionerate police had moved the DGP to handover the investigations to the elite EOW as they have experts in handling such economic fraud cases and accordingly, the DGP R P Sharma entrusted CB CID to go for detailed investigation..

Arrested by the Twin City Police last week, Jyoti Ranjan alias Bapi was facing as many as four fraud cases registered in Chandrasekharpur, Laxmisagar and Saheed Nagar Police Stations of Bhubaneswar.

The Chandrasekharpur  case pertaining to encashment of cheques worth Rs 12.04 crore and the Laxmisagar case related to duping of Rs 4.50 crore from different persons by Jyoti Ranjan have been taken up by the EOW for investigations, the Crime Branch Chief said.

However, Bharatiya Janata Party Odisha unit today has blasted the State Government for trying to protect party leaders, legislators and ministers involved in alleged monetary transactions with the Golden Baba.

“The Police and the Crime Branch are avoiding investigation of the concerned leaders although the Media is agog with news of such involvement,” party Vice President Samir Mohanty told reporters here.  He said stories to this effect are also in wide circulation in the Social Media.

Alleging that attempts are being made to save the party leaders, Mr.Mohanty said solely with this in view the government has handed over the charge of investigation to the Crime Branch overtaking the Commissionerate Police, and asked the State Government to clarify if it considers the Commissionerate Police less efficient to handle the investigation.
