Hemant Sharma, Secretary Energy of Odisha has added another plume to his fledging cap.

Mr.Sharma been conferred with prestigious CBIP AWARD-2019 for his outstanding contribution in Power Sector Development.

Mr.Sharma received this award today from R K Singh,Union Minister, Power, Government of India here in a well attended ceremony.

In order to recognize the excellent contributions of various professional, the Central Board of Irrigation and Power (CBIP) has been presenting this Award since 1927. 

Mr.Sharma, who is also CMD OPTCL & GRIDCO has been playing a pivotal role in development of the Power Sector of Odisha.

Under his able leadership, the Power Sector in the State of Odisha including Power Generation, Power Transmission, Bulk Power Purchase & Trading and Power Distribution &
Retail Power Supply arms of the Sector have thrived and achieved new heights.

His extra ordinary management expertise and deeper knowledge in handling Energy Sector is remarkably acclaimed in various forums at National and International level.

His impeccable Disaster Management acumen, could accomplish restoration of the power transmission and distribution network in Ganjam District in record time after the
severe cyclonic storm Phailin in 2013.   

Mr.Sharma is an alumni of the University of Roorkee in Electrical Engineering. He joined Indian Administrative Services in the year 1995.

In addition to the Power Sector in Odisha, he has also made significant contribution in Land & Revenue Management, Food Security, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs,
Industrial Development, Finance, Technical Education and Labour & Employment sectors in various capacities.

His vision and strategic planning has brought the State Power Sector from deficit to surplus status with adequate infrastructure development in Generation (conventional as well renewable),
Transmission and Distribution systems. Under his leadership, State has achieved electrification of all villages well before
the target date of Government of India.

With his sincere effort and guidance, the “Urja Mitra” scheme of Union Government , has been successfully implemented
in all the four DISCOMs of Odisha. In spite of many geographical and demographical challenges across the State, under his leadership, Odisha could achieve the herculean task of extending electricity connection to all the house-holds in a
time bound period i.e. by 31 December 2018. 

He has been a pioneer in implementing many IT interventions to bring reform in Power Distribution sector which resulted
in reduction of AT&C loss in LT sector by 11% during last three years.

Few of such initiatives are 100% mobile phone based photo billing, online electricity Revenue Collection System and
High Value Consumer Management System.

Tracking and realizing electricity bill from all Government Consumers through a common online portal was one of his
initiatives which led to streamlining of revenues collection.

Further, Mr.Sharma has introduced many hi-tech, modern initiatives in achieving operational excellency of transmission infrastructure like the idea of Emergency Transformer Bank, implementation of HTLS conductor (High Temperature Low Sag), conversion of single circuit to Double Circuit, Advanced Metering Infrastructure and N-2 & N-1 contingency plan for GRIDs.

With his personal efforts, Odisha has always been at forefront run to implement many high-end technologies in Power sector like Gas Insulated Substation (GIS), GRID Automation (SAS) and Geographical Information System (Web-GIS)
for mapping of Transmission assets in Odisha Power Sector.

Under his leadership, Odisha Power Sector Corporations have received many accolades including Gold Shield award from Ministry of Power, Government of India year after year for highest Transmission System Availability in the Country.
