Naveen Stake High

The stake of BJD President and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik is very high as the elections for the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha is barely left some hours.

Who’s who in Indian politics have approached Naveen and sought the support of BJD as neither the BJP led NDA and Congress led UPA have required number to win the Thursday polls.
The latest tall leader who called up Naveen, was Prime Minister Narendra Modi who sought BJD’s support in favour of NDA candidate Harivansh.
Mr.Modi was followed by veteran Congress leaders- Gulan Nabi Azad and Ahemad Patel. Both the Congress leaders approached Naveen to ensure votes of nine BJD MPs in the Rajya Sabha.
Earlier yesterday, BJP president Amit Shah, JD(U) president and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, NCP leader Sharad Pawar and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had called up Naveen for gathering BJD’s support for their candidates.
As Naveen preferred to keep the cards close to his heart till the 11th hours, Prime Minister Modi was forced to make an attempt to seek BJD’s vote for NDA candidate.
Naveen, sources said, has not displeased any one so far. Though voting for the RS deputy chairman post remained some hours, Naveen preferred not to reveal his party’s stand therefore keeping everybody in hanging position.
Even UPA candidate B K Hariprasad said: “I am likely to win the polls, but everything depend on the BJD’s decision.”
The current strength of the Rajya Sabha is 244 and support of 123 members is required for a candidate to win the polls.
The BJD, headed by Patnaik, has been claiming that the regional party maintained equal distance from both the Congress-led UPA and the BJP-led NDA.
Political pundits opine that BJD may support BJP in view of the recent relationship with BJP.
Amit Shah had recently praised BJD for its support in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) issue. The BJD was the only political party other than the BJP which had supported the NRC.
Earlier, the BJD had also supported the NDA during the presidential elections, demonetisation, GST and other issues.

The post of the deputy chairman, Rajya Sabha, is lying vacant since July after retirement of PJ Kurien.
