Intel Meet On Lightning

With Odisha accounts for the highest number of Lightning fatalities and facing frequent Thunderstorms, the State Government is gearing up to host an International conference on Thunderstorm and Lightning.

Fatalities in Odisha due to Lightning are more than 20 Percent of the Country’s death toll due to Lightning and severity of Thunderstorms has gone up, the main reason is higher temperature, experts say. Under this backdrop, the International Conference is being organized.

Bishnupada Sethi, Secretary Disaster Management and Managing Director, Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) chaired a preparatory meeting held here on 4 August.

Leading institutions of Odisha like SoA, IMMT, ITER, IIT, IMS, Utkal University, IMD, Bhubaneswar, Odisha Vigyan Academy, and senior officials from OSDMA & Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) participated in the meeting.

The proposed International Conference will attract local, National and International scholars, Institutions and key players to explore multifarious windows for tracking, predicting, getting alerts and warnings on thunderstorm and lightning.

Two Committees have been constituted to further the process of the International conference.

The Study also showed that while 89 per cent male persons died of lightning, women and children comprise five per cent and six per cent respectively.

Generally, lightning strikes in the second half of the day when farmers are in agricultural fields and 95 per cent casualties are reported from rural areas and maximum people die while standing under tall trees. Water bodies like dam, pond and agricultural fields are highly vulnerable.

The Conference is scheduled to be held in January 2019 will deliberate on these issues, which is serious concern among the people.
