Minor Rapes Continues

There seems to be no end to the sexual exploitation of minor girls in Odisha despite a massive awareness campaign by the Police and several stringent laws.

A shocking incident has taken place in Deogarh district where a private tutor was arrested for allegedly raping at least five minor students in over two years.

The incident took place at Taleisar village in Kundheigola area after the mother of a girl lodged a complaint on 31 July against the 44-year-old man accusing him of the crime.

Police said the accused was conducting private tuition at his residence.

He allegedly takes the girls to a different room on the pretext of giving special classes and sexually abused them there.

The age of all the five victims were  between 8 and 15 years, the police said.

When asked about the delay in lodging complaints against the accused teachers, though the tutor had been committing the crime for over two years and some girls had spoken to their parents about it none of them lodged any complaint and chose to pull out their wards from the tuitions.

When the teacher abused another girl on 31 July, her parents confronted him.

They mustered courage and lodged complaints with the police leading to his arrest.

The teacher was arrested on the basis of complaints received from the parents of the girls, Inspector In-Charge of Kundheigola Police Station Ratnakar Mallick said.

As one girl’s parents lodged complaint with the police, four other victims came forward.

The five girls and the accused teacher were sent for medical examination.
