AICC today did not accepted the resignation letter of PCC President Prasad Harichandan and asked him to continue till 2019.

Mr.Harichandan had tendered his resignation owning moral responsibility for party’s Bijepur by-poll debacle.

PCC Discipline Committee Chairperson Sandhya Rani Mohapatra said today that Mr.Harichandan’s letter to relinquish charge has been turned down by Mr.Gandhi.

“Prasad Harichandan to continue as OPCC president till 2019 elections as AICC President Rahul Gandhi is not in favour of change of guard in Odisha PCC,” she said.

Ms.Mohapatra said “There’s least chance of change of guard till 2019.”

She said the delay in decision making was due to the absence of AICC President at National Headquarters.

“As Rahul Gandhi was out of station, the decision got delayed. Election is only 8 months away,” she pointed out.

On the growing demand for Mr.Prasad’s change, the senior party leaders said it’s a large party and such developments are common.

Congress Veteran, Niranjan Patanik in his reactions said, “Till the day the resignation hasn’t been accepted, he (Prasad Harichandan) is our party President.”

“Sandhya Mohapatra might have spoken to Rahul Gandhi. That’s why she knows and saying like that. As I don’t know about it, how could I say? quipped Patnaik Sr.

Mr.Prasad had put in his papers following the rout of the party in the Bijepur by-poll.

The Party performed miserably in the constituency which was till the other day considered Congress bastion.

Its candidate Pranay Sahu not only finished a poor third following BJP and BJD, he lost his deposit which turned out to be a huge loss of face for Mr.Prasad.

It may be mentioned here that notwithstanding Modi wave and Naveen charisma, Subal Sahoo of Congress could manage to win from this constituency for last three terms consecutively.

The by-poll was necessitated following Subal succumbing to cancer in 2017.

For last one year there was demand for removal of Mr.Prasad.

Several senior Congress leaders and MLAs in State Legislative Assembly were demanding Change Of Guard pointing out list of party’s failures in Odisha.

The loss in last four Assembly elections has been accentuated by similar failures in elections to civic bodies and Panchayats in the State.

These leaders, especially the Congress MLAs led by Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra, have been insisting on a replacement on the pretext of reviving the party  which has hit the lowest in the recent past.

These leaders have openly criticized the PCC Chief for not being able to take other leaders along or salvage the glory the party had till 2000 before succumbing to the ruling BJD led by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

A change in the State leadership was predicted before the by-poll by some Congress leaders, including party Chief Whip in State Legislative Assembly, Taraprasad Bahinipati.
