All For Media Power

With less than a year left for the next general elections, BJD President and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today succeeded in getting the much needed support of two major local television channels and an established News Paper.

Mr.Patnaik announced joining of Soumya Ranjan Patnaik and Acyhuta Samanta in the BJD here though he has earlier in January this year suspended Kendrapara MP Baijayant Panda from the regional party.

Former Congress Chief Minister J B Patnaik's son-in-law Soumya Ranjan Patnaik is Editor of Odisha's largest circulated Odia daily "Sambad" and promoter of Eastern Media Private Limited which has Kanak News television channel in its stable.

Like Soumya, Samanta also has stakes in the Media (24×7 Odia news
channel Kalinga TV). Samanta, who made his political debut by joining BJD, also who enjoys international reputation for being the founder of KIIT University and Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS).

Besides getting support of Kalinga TV, the Governing BJD also expects
that Samanta's popularity in the tribal community could help the party. Samanta's KIIS houses about 25,000 tribal children.
Naveen's action in induction of Soumya and Samanta is seen as an effort to further corner party's suspended MP Baijayant Panda, whose family owns Odisha's most popular television channel-- OTV.

As OTV is seen opposing the Governing BJD ever since Panda was suspended
from the party, Naveen's latest move is aimed to counter Kendrapara MP through Kanaka and Kalinga TV channels besides the leading Odia daily Sambad.

This, Naveen already has the support of two major Odia dailies like
Dharitri and Prajatantra. While BJD MP from Dhenkanal Tathagat Satpathy is Editor of Dharitri and also controls Odisha Post, an English daily, party MP Bhartuhari is also the Editor of Cuttack based daily The Prajatantra.
