Patnaiks Join Hands

Governing BJD President and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today ended the four decade long Political Tussle between two Patnaik Families in Odisha.

Today Soumya Ranjan Patnaik joined in BJD headed by Naveen Patnaik.

Though Naveen’s father Biju Patnaik and Soumya’s father in law JB Patnaik were arch political rival since 1980s’ their children today joined hands and gave a new direction to the State Politics.
When JB Patnaik came to power in 1980, it took ten long years for Biju Patnaik to dislodge Congress Government.
JB Patnaik becomes Chief Minister of Odisha twice in a row in 1980 and 1985.
Biju Patnaik failed to dislodge Congress Government for ten years. However, in 1990, Biju came to power.
Again after 1995 elections, JB  returned to power by defeating Janata Dal though Biju Patnaik was at the height of his popularity.
JB again continued to remain Chief Minister till 1998 and Biju Patnaik passed away in 1997, while in Opposition.
From 2000 to 2018, Naveen Patnaik continued to became Chief Minister during which period, JB also passed away.
But political rivalry between the two influential Patanik Families continued till Somuya joins BJD on 7 March 2018.
Incidentally, Naveen Patnaik inducted Soumya just two days after Biju Patnaik 102th Birth anniversary.
Both the Patnaik’s Family have together ruled over Odisha for about long 35 years and still continuing.
With the two Patnaik Families becoming One, they will provide a formidable opposition to the emerging Bharatiya janata Party (BJP).
However, political observers are still in doubt, whether two swords can live in harmony under one cover.
Reacting over Soumya’s induction into BJD, his elder brother former PCC President Niranjan Patnaik said that he has no role in this episode.
“Soumya takes his own decision, and I have nothing to say, he is an intelligent person”.
Earlier, AICC had expelled Soumya Ranjan from the party in 2013 after which he formed Ama Odisha, a regional outfit and continued to oppose the Governing BJD in different forums.
