Rural Housing Overdrive

The happiness of Mangli Nayak is difficult to capture when the villager and other family members were present during the occasion on Girh Parvesh.

She never thought about the pucca house, for which she awaited for a long time.

Now, Rural Housing has become harbinger for rural poor of Mayurbhnaj district.

In the recent past due to lack of awareness and not much emphasis from administration many of rural poor were deprived from this benefit of housing which is the basic need of any house hold.

The scenario of development was changed in all perspective after April 2017 when Surendra Kumar Meena, Collector took the charge of this district.

He gave emphasis to Rural Housing which is one of the flagship programs of the State Government headed by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
Due to his innovativeness, regular monitoring and field visit to all the nooks of Mayurbhanj 33215 no of houses have already been completed in the District.
And this is not the highest completion of houses in state but in country as well.
Lack of Human resource is biggest constraint for development when out of 26 blocks, 9 blocks were functioning without BDOs and 19 Blocks were having Assistant Engineers as against the sanction post of 56.
Geographical terrain is also a big impediment in this district, most of villages and GPs are at far distance from the District Head Quarters due to heavy and dense forest most of the area are also inaccessible.

Behavior change in present practice is a major challenge for the district Administration.

Due to tribal dominated area, tribals are having notion to stay  in mud or asbestos roofing housing rather RCC roofing.

It was the biggest challenge for the District Administration to overcome with all this limitations but team effort and  leadership of Collector Mr.Meena, continuously done better in terms of Rural Housing in the State after April-2017.

Incentives to the beneficiaries who are completing their houses within 4 - 6 months are being paid through SBI Corporate Banking system at the DRDA level.

This has resulted in transparency and hassle free payment to the accounts of the beneficiaries and encouraging the beneficiaries to complete the houses early is a major motivating factor.

Apart from this with the help of Self Help Group raw material were supplied to door step of beneficiaries those who are staying in inaccessible pockets. Cost of transportation has  also been reduced in many ways though the most the pocket are inaccessible.

This initiative has helped in early completion of houses also provided livelihood to SHGs as well, Regular mason training, regular review through cluster mode, change in behavior has also been find among the tribal   after  the initiative of Grih Parivesh in presence of villagers.

These initiatives have also helped in early completion of houses, said Mr. Meena Said.

The dream to have a home of her own became true for Sita Hembram, A tribal lady from Baripada when she got Rs.20000 directly in her account without approaching any one.
