Will Prasad Continue?

The All India Congress Committee’s (AICC) a six-liner press release has created a ripple among the party leaders in Odisha.

While the leaders supporting OPCC President Prasad Harichandan are in a jolly mood, the dissident camp has been witnessing a gloomy scene.

The rival faction in state unit Congress working since a long time for a change of guard in the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC), are demoralized as the press release indicated that AICC President has ruled out any possibility of change now.

The dissident camp was hopeful that AICC president Rahul Gandhi would change the OPCC president after the Gujarat elections, sometime in the month of January.
The Congress President Rahul Gandhi, who had been sitting over the decision since months, has sprung the surprise by not going for an organizational overhaul now.
“The Congress President Shri Rahul Gandhi has taken a decision that the Presidents of all Pradesh Congress Committees, Regional Congress Committees and Territorial Congress Committees will continue in their posts after the Organizational Election also unless some decision is taken to replace them,” AICC General Secretary Janardan Dwivedi said in a release today.
Several senior leaders in the state had been pitching for former minister Niranjan Patnaik as the favored candidate for the top post.
Mr.Prasad, meanwhile has told the media that factionalism within the party is gone and it is bouncing back. The statement came after party’s unexpected success in recent Gujarat elections.
Congress’s main political rival, the BJP is however, happy over the AICC press release.
The saffron leaders in Odisha want Mr.Prasad to continue as the OPCC President because during his tenure as OPCC Chief, the BJP has made roaring success in the three-tire panchayat elections.
Though BJP occupied third slot in the state politics till panchayat polls, the party could replace the Congress to third place after rural polls.
The BJP leaders feel that it would be easy for the saffron party during the ensuing general elections if Mr.Prasad remains at the helm.
