Srihari Promises Pola Support

Kadiyam Srihari, Deputy Chief Minister of Telengana  today assured Odisha that it will stand by it in its struggle over Polavaram project being undertaken by the Andhra Pradesh Government on State’s border.

Mr.Srihari who called on Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik here at State Secretariat during his day-long visit to State, they discussed about Polavaram project.

"We are with Odisha Government so far as Polavaram issue is concerned. Telangana will also be equally affected by the project," Mr.Srihari told Media after meeting Mr.Patnaik.

Mr.Patnaik solicited continued support of Telegana Government on this issue, the sources added.

Chief Minister Mr.Patnaik had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 30 November objecting to the construction activities taken up by the Andhra Pradesh government.

Mr.Patnaik had mentioned that the constructions, which is likely to submerge a huge area on State’s border with Andhra Pradesh, sacrificed Odisha’s interest without addressing legitimate concerns.

He had also described the Polavaram construction as ‘unfortunate’ as the matter is sub judice.

Mr.Patnaik in his letter had said that the project works are going on without conducting any public hearing in Odisha which is mandatory requirement for getting any environmental clearance.

“It is surprising that neither the concerns of those most affected by the project nor their involvement is sought,” Patnaik said while seeking the PM’s intervention in the issue.

Mr.Patnaik had earlier written to his Andhra Pradesh counterpart Chandrababu Naidu also requesting that the construction work of Polavaram be stopped immediately till Odisha’s concerns were addressed.

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu on 30 November  accused the  NDA government of creating hurdles for Polavaram irrigation project.
“If the Centre wants to stop tenders, we have no option but to salute them and abandon the project. I have no objection if the Centre itself takes up the project and completes it within the 2019 deadline”, said Mr.Naidu outside the State Legislative Assembly.
