Centre Offers Pulses

With a Two Million Tons of stock in hand, the Union Government has offered the State Government to indicate its requirement of pulses looking at the shortage of supply and rise in price of the daily used food stuff.

And the Centre is offering pulses at a subsidized rate to the State Government.

While pulses supply in the market is low and rates are high, Centre’s offer comes as an opportunity for the State Government to go for cheaper purchase of pulses.

There is a Central Buffer Stock of 2 Million Ton Moong, Masur, Urad, Chana and Tur Dal with the Ministry of Consumer Affairs. So the State will able to buy the food stuff at much cheaper rate than prevailing market price.

Union Government has agreed to provide subsidy equal to the cost of procurement of pulses minus market price of pulses.

Secretary Consumer Affairs, Avinash K Srivastava has written to the State Government urging to present their requirement of pulses as early as possible, so that arrangement of supply can be made through NAFED, FCI and MMTC, said sources.

Union Government is also interested for regular rotation and disposal of the pulses from the Buffer Stock, so that optimal utilization of stock will be there and Centre will be able to release from Buffer at a reasonable rate from time to time.

This will simultaneously ensure protection of the interest of the farmers and consumers through procurement at MSP.

Subsidized pulses will be made available through Public Distribution System (PDS) and for supplies under any State Government Operated Programs.

Mid Day Meal (MDM) provided to the children in the schools and Anganwadi Centres will be able to reap the benefit, said a senior official in the Department of Food Supply and Consumer Welfare.

In Odisha Moong, Masur and Urad Dal requirement is high and rates are going up due to short supply.

So this offer of the Union Government for supply of subsidized will be helpful for the State.

Earlier during the acute shortage and steep hike in rates of pulses, State Government has approaching the Centre to help out the State time and again.

Now the Centre has urged the State Administration to inform the Centre for its Monthly and Annual Requirement, so that the Union Government will chalk out Supply Plan for an early implementation, so that consumers will not be face distress due to high rate of pulses.

Sources said after receiving the proposal, Department of Food Supply and Consumer Welfare has started collect District wise requirement on Pulses and accordingly State’s requirement will be notified to the Centre.
