VVPAT For Elections

Election Commission of India (ECI) has made it clear that as in all future elections, Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) will be used; no relaxation will be allowed in Upper Limit of 1200 Voters in Rural and 1400 Voters in Urban Polling Stations.

VVPAT is a method that provides feedback to voters. It is an independent verification printer machine and attached to Electronic Voting Machine (EVM). This allows voters to verify if their vote has gone to the intended candidate.

When a voter presses a button in the EVM, a paper slip is printed through the VVPAT.

The slip contains the party symbol and name of the candidate. It allows the voter to verify his/her choice.

After being visible to the voter from a glass case in the VVPAT for few seconds, the ballot slip will be cut and dropped into the drop box in the VVPAT machine and beep will be heard.

VVPAT machines can be accessed by the Polling Officers only.

A Calendar has been prepared by ECI and according to the Calendar, the CEO will publish Draft Electoral Roll on 18 September and filing of claims begins from that that, which will continue till 31 October, 2017.

As the Special Summery Revision of Photo Electoral Rolls process begins in Odisha from 18 September, ECI has written to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Odisha in this regard, said official sources.

For the revision 1 January, 2018 will be qualifying date and Final Voter List will be published on 15 January 2018.

During the period there will be ban on postings and transfer of officers, who are engaged in such a massive exercise in which entire election machinery of the State takes part.

Officials engaged in preparation, correction and revision of the electoral rolls shall be deemed to be on deputation to the Election Commission for the period during which they are employed.

This time focus is on registration of New Age voters and missing voters especially in the category of Person with Disability (PwD), Gender and other vulnerable and marginalized sections of society.
