Change The Guard

Everything now depends on Maharaja Jitendra Singh, the closest aide of AICC Vice President Rahul Gandhi.

As he is leading the TEAM AICC along with Tamradhwaj Sahu,  Gaurav Gogoi and Odisha in-charge BK Hariparasad  to take stock of the party situation, there is no denying the fact that the Congress party is into a deep  abyss.
Mr.Singh now seized of the matter that the party has been decimated in successive elections and has lost its position as the main opposition.
Things have become worse in the past couple of months with leaders in the faction-ridden party engaging themselves in war of words.
There has been a rapacious demand for the ouster OPCC President Prasad Harichandan who has failed to keep the flock together.
“Change The Guard” is the buzz in Congress Circle here.
Three years into PCC chief, Harichandan’s continuation has only aggravated the situation.
Right now, the overriding sentiment seems to be one which favours the ex-PCC Chief Niranjan Patnaik for the top post.
Whether that materializes is not is a different issue. But the fact remains that Senior Patnaik is the most potential candidate for the OPCC President at this critical juncture.
He has experience, he can take along all factions together, has the muscle and money power.
What’s more he is a pan-Odisha leader and his dictates can work wonders.
Ever since the ‘Oust-Prasad’ demand became raucous, there has been a coming together of the elected representatives in support of  Mr.Patnaik.
None less than the Congress Chief Whip Tara Prasad Bahinipati  said sometime back, “There have been attempts to suppress the voice of the MLAs since long. We are united and we back Niranjan Patnaik.”
Going by the past events and the opinionated mind of the High Command, it is highly unlikely that Mr.Patnaik will be made PCC President even if the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) Members support him.
As for the current PCC chief, he has only been trying hard to save his post although his show in the recent panchayat election was depressing to say the least.
When almost all prominent Congress leaders from the State have already met party Vice President Rahul Gandhi and discussed the new President issue threadbare, the decision to send this three member observer team smacks of a design to keep Niranjan Patnaik away from the post.
At a time when the ruling BJD is going through tough times and the BJP is emerging a contender for power in the state, prudence demands that the Congress President should take a tough and quick decision and make someone the PCC chief who can rescue the party from the deep hole.
The Congress in Odisha needs a life-saving pill and not anti-biotic. The widespread sentiment in the party can be gauged from this explosive statement by Sundargarh MLA Jogesh Singh who warned that the party will be ruined if Niranjan is not made the President.
Sources said that there is unanimity over choice of Senior Patnaik to head OPCC and on 13 August they will be meeting Team AICC to press their demand.
Will Mr.Singh take the call and tell the ground reality to the Big Boss of Congress or go for a soft choice, which will further weaken the Century old party in Odisha.
