Visionary Engineer and Academician Gopinath Padhi who passed away on April 17 in a hospital in Gurugram was cremated at the Satyanagar crematorium.
Dr.Padhi, Father-in-Law of the Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi, was 81 when he breathed his last.
Known and respected as an expert in Water Resources and Hydrology Engineering in Sector in Odisha.
Dr.Padhi has also served the State as Advisor to Government in Irrigation and Power Sector.
Son-ln-Law, Aditya Prasad Padhi, son Ranjit Kumar Padhi, many senior officers, engineers, academicians, social workers and relatives were present at the cremation site.
Dr.Padhi joined the Department of Irrigation and Power in 1957 after completing his engineering education from Andhra University.
His thirst for knowledge and scientific temper drove him to avail PG Diploma in Water Engineering and subsequently Masters Degree from Delft University, Netherland.
Because of his high quality research works he was conferred with Doctorate in Philosophy by IIT, Roorkee.
He joined as a Faculty Member in IIT Roorkee in 1977 and became a visiting Professor to Colorado State University, USA.
He returned to State Government service as Superintending Engineer and led the construction works of Power House & Irrigation System of Upper Kolab Project.
Dr.Padhi was in charge of construction, operation and maintenance of various medium irrigation projects of Ganjam and Puri districts.
His efforts for inclusion of Indravati Irrigation Project in Overseas Economic Co-operation Fund of Japan are a mile stone in the irrigation history of Odisha.
Dr.Padhi was in charge of Upper Indravati Multipurpose irrigation Project during peak period of its construction and successfully guided restoration of Rusikulya Irrigation Project damaged in 1990 high fold and cyclone.
He also led the construction works of many irrigation projects including Subarnarekha Project. As Engineer-in-Chief, Dr.Padhi gave innovative engineering techniques in operation and maintenance of a number of major & medium irrigation projects in Odisha.
After his superannuation in 1994, State Government engaged him as Advisor in Water Resource & Hydrology Sector.
His technical and engineering expertise helped inclusion of many hydrology projects under World Bank funding schemes.
The 10th and 12th day rituals will be held on April 26 and April 28 respectively, said sources in his family.
