Training For Livestock Growth


Two days long  training program for District level Master trainers of Fisheries and Animal Husbandry Department was organized at Veterinary officers’ Training Institute, Bhubaneswar on 6-7 March, 2017.


Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Fisheries and Animal resources Development Department, Bishnupada Sethi inaugurated the Training program on 6 March.

During his inaugural speech, he emphasized on close monitoring and supervision of census work by the Supervisors.

Mr.Sethi  viewed that Livestock Census is an important activity as it helps for future planning in a systematic manner. He stressed to cover all the households during enumeration. Proper training in
local Odiya language should be given to all the primary enumerators and supervisors at District level.

The manual in Odiya should be supplied for effective survey work in field. Tablet computers will be used for the first time for data collection for which it will be easy to monitor the census activity. Supervisors should ensure that data entry will be done properly at field level.

Detailed discussion on different schedules to be canvassed was made during the training. The data of Livestock Census/Breed Survey shall be used as a sampling frame while estimating the no. of animals for arriving at livestock production such as milk, egg, meat and wool.

Therefore, there is a need for having a strong database of Livestock Census and hence during this year it has been decided to have a Breed-Wise Livestock Census which will be highly useful for all policy and programmes of the each Divisions of the Department.

During this 20th Livestock Census, enumeration about the indigenous Cattle Breeds (Binjharpuri, Khariar, Motu, Ghumushur), 2 Buffalo breeds (Chilika, Kalahandi), 3 Sheep breed (Ganjam, Bolangir, Kendrapada) , 2 goat breed (Ganjam, Black Bengal) and one poultry breed (Aseel) will be taken up along with other species. Data about Fisherman will also be captured separately.

The Livestock Census started in the year 1919 and so far 19 Livestock Censuses were conducted. The Census is being conducted in every five years and the coming census 20th Livestock census will be taken up during the period from 16 July to 15 October, 2017.
